After 12 weeks in space, Boeing’s Starliner spacecraft is preparing to return from the International Space Station on September 6, but without its crew. The spacecraft will undock from the orbiting laboratory and spend about six hours maneuvering closer to home before landing in New Mexico’s White Sands Space Harbor. Despite the setbacks with gas leaks and propulsion system issues, NASA will assess the return trip to determine the future of the Boeing program. If there are further problems, it could result in additional costs and damage Boeing’s reputation. NASA will have to decide whether to grant the spacecraft human spaceflight certification.
